Summer 2018 Announcements

5/20/2018

It's been over a year since the last "news" update here at the Altar of Freedom homepage and some announcements are probably overdue. For more than a year I have been working on a number of new wargaming projects not directly related to AoF, and I'm pleased to report that a couple of them will be wrapping up this summer. Also wrapping up within the next month will be a long, long overdue follow up to Gibraltar of the West, our campaign supplement that has been downloaded for free on this website by nearly 5,000 of you. Read on after the break for all the summer announcements!

Video Project

Picture
Some 18 months in the making, this July at Historicon our local gaming club will be releasing a massive video project on YouTube, dedicated to historical miniature gaming. Altar of Freedom is a very small part of that video series, but I do hope this project will appeal to wargamers well beyond the American Civil War niche. Check back the last week of June for an avalanche of news and and content for this. It's been a massive effort for our club to pull off and I think we are all excited to see the finished product out there. I don't think I'm over-selling the series when I say that it will blow away any other historical wargaming videos you've watched online.

New Rules in the pipeline

Totally unrelated to AoF or even the American Civil War, I've been editing and formatting a new set of wargaming rules. It's something we've played in our club for over ten years and finally decided to publish. The rules will be available as a PDF (possibly also for print-on-demand) and will be released this September. I'm not prepared to unveil the title quite yet, but the rules cover ancient warfare from the Peloponnesian War through the fall of Rome, with specific focus on the Punic Wars. The mechanics have nothing to do with Altar of Freedom, but they are also designed for fast-play, large battles. There are some very innovative mechanics, particularly for pre-battle terrain placement and siege warfare, and like AoF, a large number of historical scenarios will be available. The research and development of those scenarios has been extremely time-consuming over the last six months. Again, many more details and some fun photos will be forthcoming over the summer.

Altar of Freedom Content

Last but not least--YES--there will be some new AoF content coming this summer. By far our most popular terrain tutorial is "How to Make 6mm Forests," a tutorial that's been viewed nearly 100,000 times! For several years I've experimented with methods to create 6mm pine trees and only in the last few months did I settle on a system I really like. This summer we'll have a full photo-tutorial on how you can make nearly 800 pine trees for $10.

I thought I'd wrap up this post with a mention of the second campaign supplement, which has been 95% complete, fully play-tested, but still languishing due to my other commitments. That supplement will finally see the light of day in late June 2018. Mark your calendar.

Some really interesting news. About to embark on gaming the Western Theatre in 3mm (mainly Peter Pig with some Ozmy Oddzial and Irregular Miniatures figures and terrain), so I'm looking forward to the tutorial on pine trees.

This is great news. I had wondered if we would see more for AoF - all of these items are good to hear. Thanks so much for doing what you do!!
