The summer of 1864 saw Jubal Early best his Federal opponent, Philip Sheridan, through a series of evasive, cat-and-mouse maneuvers. But in mid-September, Sheridan finally learned the true strength of the Confederate position at Winchester and pushed ahead to attack.
