the Battle Seven Pines

"Victory has no charms for me when purchased at such a cost."
--General George B. McClellan

In the spring of 1862, McClellan's peninsula campaign finally brought him within nine miles of Richmond. Victory, albeit a painfully slow one, seemed close at hand. But when a heavy rain made the Chickahominy River impassible, Johnston saw a chance to catch the Federal army divided at Fair Oaks Station.
