For those interested, our local gaming club is also running a Hammerin' Iron riverine ironclad scenario on Friday evening at Fall In. It's a very fun "beer & pretzels" game and we'll have four more slots for that game, as well. A full description of the Peachtree Creek scenario appears after the break....
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Atlanta campaign, we'll be running the entire Battle of Peachtree Creek at the 2014 Fall In convention. If you're planning to be at this year's convention, registration begins in two weeks, and we have four slots available for this scenario. Every Altar of Freedom game we've run the past three years has been fully booked in pre-registration before the convention, so sign up and join us! And if you're not able to attend Fall In at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, just wait until a couple days afterward and we'll have a full recap of the entire game available on the AAR page, packed with photos and maps.

A number of players have expressed interest in our double blind rules, as seen in the Glendale and Jonesboro scenario AARs. If you've read those reports, you probably noticed our "matchbox rig," based on a fog of war concept developed by Don Featherstone many years ago. Basically, a series of labeled matchboxes correspond to a gridded map. Players take turns moving their hidden formations in the matchboxes, which allows you to fight a true double blind game with a single table and no referee or GM. I've uploaded a draft of the rules we use at our club to run these games. The rules are fairly simple, but they explain how to move, spot other units, deploy on the tabletop when contact is made, and potentially "melt" back into the woods if you want your troops to disappear again. The rules are available now on the Free Downloads page. --GRW With the dog days of summer upon us, it's time for some official updates on Altar of Freedom. First, there's a new AAR available with great photos of the Sailors Creek scenario. This was a real nail-biter that went down the last turn...could Lee's army stave off destruction? Find out here! Second, we are not attending Historicon 2014 to run any games, as many of you have inquired. Brigade Games, which distributes printed copies of the rules, will be at the vendor hall if you'd like to check out a copy. We are planning to run games at HMGS Fall In 2014 in Lancaster. Finally, with the 151st anniversary of Gettysburg only weeks away, we are releasing a new set of FREE 3mm paper buildings to help you experience all three days of the battle. After the break, you can catch a quick preview of what to expect from this free PDF download, which will be made available before the end of the month. As always, happy gaming! --GRW In this quarter's issue of the fantastic ACW GAMER Ezine, we've provided a custom 3mm paper model of the Troup Hurt house. This famous brick structure stood outside Atlanta, not far from Bald Hill, where John B. Hood launched a furious counter-attack on July 22nd. Inside the latest issue of the ezine, you can print a copy of the model and construct your own Troup Hurt house in about ten minutes. The article provides some background on the historic structure, instructions for quick assembly, and of course, the paper model itself! So as if you needed any more reasons to become a subscriber to one of the hobby's best new publications, visit ACW GAMER now! A couple extra pictures of our custom paper building appear below the break. Don't forget--you can refight Hood's July 22nd counterattack against McPherson using one of the 18 scenarios offered in our latest supplement, Atlanta is Ours. This massive PDF supplement also includes all the other operations of the Atlanta campaign. For players not busy fighting for control west of the Mississippi with our new Atlanta is Ours supplement, there is a new FREE scenario available. Hop over to the "Free Downloads" page and try the Second Kernstown scenario, which requires a fairly small number of miniatures to play. This scenario is not available in either our of PDFs and is entirely new. We've also play-tested the battle as a true double-blind scenario, running two identical tables separated by a screen. You can read about the results and see all the game photos in our latest AAR! So take a break from your campaigns in Georgia and return to the Shenandoah Valley for a free 1864 scenario. In the coming months, we'll continue posting more free stuff, including other battles not available in the scenario PDFs. --GRW Ray and his gaming companions in Australia sent over some inspiring pictures from the Bentonville scenario in the new Atlanta is Ours Western battles supplement. A major Federal victory has been reported, with Johnston's surprise attack lacking the necessary punch to score what might have been the last Confederate victory of the war. Ray's games always look fantastic, and I'm a huge fan of how the Hotz mat enhances these tables in 6mm scale. Click on any of the images for larger versions, and be sure to try the Bentonville scenario for yourself!
--GRW Next Saturday, MARCH 8, you can see Altar of Freedom in action at the annual HMGS Cold Wars convention. The Battle of Shiloh will be played at 1:00pm, where you can check out our custom 4'x4' Shiloh board first-hand. There are lots of other great historical games to see, so stop by and find us at Cold Wars 2014! And just in case you still need a copy of the rules, Altar of Freedom will be available for sale from Brigade Games in the vendor hall. See you next weekend in Lancaster, Pennsylvania! Are you ready to stop Sherman's drive to capture Atlanta? Step into the boots of Joseph E. Johnston, and then John Bell Hood, to see if you're up to the task in some of the war's greatest battles. Atlanta is Ours is a 140-page supplement, featuring the 18 largest engagements fought in the western theater. Available now from Iron Ivan Games! To help get you in the fighting spirit, check our latest battle report, the Battle of Jonesboro in August 1864. Can William Hardee carry out Hood's orders to secure the Macon & Western Railroad? Tonight our local club rolled out the river terrain for an ironclad brawl somewhere up the Yazoo. Over the past couple years we've played several games using Peter Pig's Hammerin' Iron rules--always resulting in a good time with lots of fun. Check after the break for more photos of the game, including spar torpedoes and fire rafts! What does this have to do with Altar of Freedom? Very little, really. I just like puttering around with some unreliable ironclads every now and then. Who doesn't? The second issue of the brand-new ACW GAMER e-zine includes a nice feature article with Altar of Freedom. We have a detailed AAR of the Battle of Seven Pines, with lots of background information, game photos, maps, historical images, and first-hand player reports. If you're not yet familiar with the e-zine, check out the website for a nice preview of what to expect in each quarterly issue. It's a fantastic way to get your ACW war-gaming fix throughout the year. The editor also accepts (and encourages!) submissions from players all over the world, including articles and photos of their games. --GRW |
