Battles in May 1864 always seemed to end the same way--the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the North Anna River--with Grant directing the Army of the Potomac to skirt Lee's flank. On June 1, 1864, the same maneuver got underway when Lee and Grant both directed their forces to converge on a crossroads above the Chickahominy River...Cold Harbor.
