the Vicksburg Campaign"The opening of the Mississippi River will be to us of more advantage than the capture
of forty Richmonds." --US Chief-of-Staff Henry Halleck By early-1863 only the fortress of Vicksburg held the two halves of the Confederacy together. Leaders in Washington DC and Richmond both saw the city as a prize of military and political value, but multiple Federal operations against Vicksburg had met with embarrassing defeat. Ulysses S Grant planned a bold spring campaign to ferry his entire army below the city and establish a landing on the eastern shore of the Mississippi where he could finally attack Vicksburg by land. On April 29 Grant's army made the crossing at Grand Gulf, rapidly consolidating a beachhead. Confederate troops under General John Pemberton stood ready to defend the city, along with a stream of rebel reinforcements arriving at Jackson, some 40 miles east. Our campaign begins in the first week of May 1863, as Grant's army prepares to march. |
